Michael began the Trombone in high school
under the tutelage of Earl Winterstein and in Year 12 was awarded a Queensland
Education Department’s ‘MOST’ scholarship.
In that same year Michael successfully auditioned for the QLD Conservatorium
and began study with Arthur Middleton(ex Principal, Vienna Philharmonic).
Deciding to specialize in Bass Trombone, Michael changed teachers to Tom Coyle
(Bass Trombone, The Queensland Orchestra).
Variety has always been a big draw card, and Michael has endeavoured to expose
himself to as many musical styles as possible.
Since 1997, Michael has worked as a side man to singers, dancers, jugglers,
magicians, contortionists and comedians, as well as working with gypsy orchestras
and pep bands.
Michael has also worked in the free lance orchestral scene with the Queensland
Orchestra, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra as well as various festival
and scratch orchestras.
Michael is a foundation member of ‘Brass On
Tap’ - a QLD based Brass Quintet, who won the Queensland Arts
Council’s ‘Gertrude Langer’
Scholarship in 2001. Brass On Tap was subsequently toured by the QAC in 2002
and 2003.
Michael was engaged to work in the pit for the 2001 season of ‘Annie’
and in the 2002 season of ‘Singin’ in
the Rain’ in Brisbane.
In 2005, Michael moved to Sydney to continue free lancing and to take a position
in the RAAF Air Command Band, Sydney.
